The Royal Meteorological Society Mentoring Scheme

The RMetS Mentoring Scheme is a member-only benefit created to support RMetS members working in weather and climate, by providing personalised guidance from experienced professionals.

As a mentee, the scheme will connect you to mentors who offer insight, career advice, and other support to help you on your professional pathway toward achieving your aspirations.

You will gain access to seasoned meteorologists eager to share their knowledge and expertise. This mentorship goes beyond typical career advice. It includes skills development, networking opportunities, and guidance tailored to your career goals.

The Mentoring Scheme focuses on three core activities:

Professional Development

Obtain support in the early stages of your career. For example, your mentor can explain the Professional Accreditation process and how to become a Chartered or Registered member of RMets, as well as providing guidance on fulfilling Continuing Professional Development requirements.

Skills Development

Discuss skill-related topics. Perhaps you want to learn new skills, or perhaps you would like to develop your existing skills. Whether it’s conquering a fear of public speaking or being able to better handle the responsibilities of a new line management role, your mentor will share valuable advice.

Networking

Grow your professional network. Your mentors can help you expand your network, opening up new opportunities.

How does the RMetS Mentoring Scheme work?

Once we have matched you to a mentor, the first thing to do will be to decide how you want to work together. This could be a face-to-face meeting or by email or telephone. You will also decide how often you would like to interact. This could be a regular monthly chat or ad-hoc whenever a question arises. It is important that both you and your mentor are happy with the level of input and frequency of meetings in order to maintain a fruitful mentoring relationship.

Being matched to the right mentor is key to your success. When applying, it is important to think about your career goals as this will ultimately determine the benefits you receive and help match you to a mentor with the right skills and experience. For example, would you like a mentor that can help with short-term challenges or with your longer-term career trajectory, or both!
