Michael Kendon

Mike works on developing and maintaining the UK’s climate monitoring system and underlying dataset, named HadUK-Grid, based on observations from the surface network of weather stations. His work encompasses software development, data and event analysis and science communication with the ultimate aim of putting the UK’s changing climate into long term context.

Mike has been the lead author of the Met Office’s annual State of the UK Climate reports since the first report in 2014 (published in the International Journal of Climatology since 2017). Mike joined the NCIC team in 2009 and has been closely involved in reengineering NCIC’s climate monitoring system, named ClimateGrid, for more than a decade. The goal has been a fully modern, documented and robust code-base to produce a traceable and reproducible dataset, meeting the requirements of government, business and research users, with routine monitoring also provided for the Met Office Public Weather Service.
