Earth Hour 2020

27 March 2020

Earth Hour is an annual event encouraging individuals and organisations around the world to turnoff non-essential lights for one hour between 8:30 and 9:30pm local time. This year it will take place on Saturday 28th March.

The idea of Earth Hour initially came from WWF Australia in 2004 who looked at ways to engage Australians on the issue of climate change. The first event, originally known as The Big Flick, took place in Sydney in 2007. By 2008 it had become an international event with 35 countries and over 400 cities involved.

In 2020, millions of people from more than 180 countries will celebrate Earth Hour with a focus on participating virtually this year because of the impact of COVID-19. The blog https://latest.earthhour.org/earthhour-at-home suggests different ways people can get involved with the event from the comfort of their own home from night photography to dinner in the dark.
