SPEAKER: Dr Anna Maidens, Met Office.
ABSTRACT: Recent years have seen dramatic improvements in the ability of forecast centres around the world to forecast out to seasonal timescales and beyond. In the past, statistical models have been widely used, but increasingly, climate models run from realistic initial conditions are providing useful forecast information. The talk will look at the types of uses long-range forecasts have (for example contingency planning, infrastructure, the energy industry, agriculture, reinsurance) before going on to look at the underlying climate dynamics which makes long-range forecasting possible.
