Over recent decades the two polar regions have exhibited markedly different changes. Whilst the Arctic has shown ubiquitous warming and a rapid decline in sea ice extent, the Antarctic has experienced an overall smaller average temperature changes and a net increase in sea ice extent, but with strong spatial variability in both. These contrasting changes between the hemispheres highlight the importance of understanding climate variability and change at the regional scale, particularly in the polar regions which have a crucial role in the global climate system. This meeting will review the drivers that influence southern high latitude climate and their current state, with the aim of looking ahead to how they may change in the future.
