SPEAKER: Miroslav Provod, University of Leeds.
ABSTRACT: "Storm Chasing" is a term describing the pursuit of any form of severe weather for a range of reasons including curiosity, scientific study and news media coverage. The majority of hobbyist and science-led storm chasing goes on in the central US in an area known as 'Tornado Alley'. However, storm chasing occurs all over the globe and it isn’t all about Tornadoes – many chasers (including Miroslav) pursue severe weather for the purpose of documenting lightning, large hail, interesting cloud formations, and also some less well known effect such as thundersnow.
Since getting his driving license in 2004 Miroslav has completed over 200 storm chases in 23 countries, driving hundreds of thousands of miles in the process! During the adrenalin fuelled chases he has seen and recorded tornadoes, funnel clouds, very large hail, close-range lightning strikes, thundersnow and much more. In this talk Miroslav will briefly explain how thunderstorms work and will show different types of convective storms together with some real life examples. He will also give an overview of how to chase a storm, and how to stay safe whilst still enjoying it!
